Chests in Merge Dragons are part of events that regularly take place in the game and provide players with event-specific rewards. There are multiple different types of chests in the game, each of which symbolizes different events that have been in the game for a limited time. The chests are used to gather more useful items for your cities.
The current understanding is that the contents, price, and rarity of merged Chests depend on the Chest that you dragged and dropped when merging. The obvious exploit is that you can use easier-to-obtain Chests as fodder and only one Chest of the desired type when attempting to merge, thus maximizing the outcome.

How to get Chests in Merge Dragons?
Dragon Chests can be harvested or spawned from many objects present in the Dragon world. They can also be found under Evil Fog or offered as a reward for certain Levels. In Camp, they are locked and need to be opened with Dragon Gems.
Common for all Dragon Chests is that the only way to open them within Camp is by spending Dragon Gems. Within Levels, they may be opened at no cost. Level 1 Dragon Egg Chests, level 2 Radiant Egg Chests, and level 3 Dragon Nest Vaults are primarily gained through harvesting items, healing Dead Land in the Camp, and tapping Goal Stars.
Treasure Chests can be found as Level Rewards, by tapping Goal Stars or by harvesting most Merge Chains. Generally, the higher the level of the object you harvest, the better the Treasure Chests can be found.
